A few manicure at home dos to ensure that you are not stuck with a manicure gone wrong:
Clean your nails well before you begin. Remove traces of lotion or cuticle oil, the polish won't stick evenly and will chip more readily. Use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol or nail polish remover to clean the surface of your nails before you paint.
Apply a base coat to smoothen out the nails' ridges, allowing polish to go on more evenly. It also protects nails from staining when you wear dark polish colours.
Wipe your brush carefully along the bottle's neck when you remove it from the bottle. This removes excess, bubble-producing nail colour.
Apply the nailpolish in three sweeps from the cuticles to the tips — one in the middle, and one on either side of the nail. You may need to use more strokes, but keep in mind that the fewer sweeps of colour, the more even the result.
Clean up as you go. You may inevitably wind up with some polish on the skin around your nails. Use a wooden nail stick to quickly swipe away the excess before you move on to the next nail.
Finish it off with a top coat. This will seal the polish onto your nails and gives a nice shiny finish as it camouflages streaks and small bubbles if any.
Allow ample drying time. Though your nails may feel dry to touch, remember that they may still be prone to nicking for a few hours afterward. Applying polish before sleeping is therefore a bad idea.
